Dr. Eizirik obtained his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (1994), a Master’s degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology also from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (1997), and a Ph.D. degree in Biology from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA (2002).

He continued his research as a Post-Doctoral Fellow of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA (2003). From 2004 to 2018 he was an Associate Professor at the School of Biosciences (in 2017 incorporated into the School of Sciences) of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Brazil. In 2018 he became a Full Professor at the PUCRS School of Sciences. At the moment, he serves as Chair of the Graduate Program in Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity at PUCRS. He is a member of the Institute for Neotropical Carnivore Conservation, Brazil, as well as a member of the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group, Small Carnivore Specialist Group and Conservation Genetics Specialist Group.

His main fields of research interest are Evolutionary Genetics, Conservation Genetics, Genomics, Phylogenetic Systematics and Molecular Ecology, with most of his research focusing on Neotropical carnivoran evolution, genetics, genomics, ecology, systematics and conservation.
